Mumm's Stellar champagne, designed to be drunk in space!

11004 Views

Mumm's Stellar Champagne, designed to be drunk in weightless space, like Louis XIII's The Drope Cognac in 1cl bottles, has redefined the way wine and spirits are drunk. But is all this really serious?

We're drinking less. From 125 liters per person per year in France in the 1960s, we're down to 35 liters. We're also drinking better. A decrease in purchases often coincides with an increase in alcohol budgets (wine, spirits, beer). Young people in their 20s and 30s are interested in wine down to the smallest detail, and are learning to taste it. Drunkenness is losing ground, particularly among people who want to control their social networking profile. On the vineyard front, organic farming is taking its place. In one generation, the change is enormous. What's next? How will we taste in the decades to come? The big brands are looking into this problem.

In 2023, a bottle of Mumm Stellar will be sent into space. The development of this unique bottle has required years of research, in collaboration with CNES and NASA Axiom. The market is certainly promising, but the plan doesn't seem to be motivated by profits alone. For the creators of the Mumm Stellar project, doing everything possible to ensure that astronauts taste bubbles in their capsules is above all about ensuring that the world of tomorrow retains a little humanity. Other champagne brands have a different vision of the future, envisioning individual bottles that can be carried as easily as a smartphone. Another view questions rituals as old as our consumption, hitherto based on sharing. The avenues explored speak volumes about the evolution of our tastes and society.

The House of Mumm presents Cordon Rouge Stellar, the first champagne that can be enjoyed in space and will embark on future manned space flights.

Beyond the technological challenge, Mumm Cordon Rouge Stellar will contribute to writing Earth culture in the new era of human history that is opening up before us. Initiated in 2017, this ambitious project now benefits from compliance with space specifications and AOC Champagne specifications. This allows Mumm Cordon Rouge Stellar to embark on future Axiom Space missions to test the ritual in real space conditions, thanks to the collaboration between Maison Mumm and Axiom Space.

100% FRENCH: COMPLEX MANUFACTURING AND HIGH-TECH DESIGN

To meet the specifications of the dual space-AOC Champagne, Mumm Cordon Rouge Stellar had to respond to a complex set of constraints (gaseous liquid in the absence of gravity, pressure contained in the bottle, food compatibility, material specifications, size, ergonomics and intuitive use). All technical questions relating to the design were handled by Octave de Gaulle, the founder of SPADE, with the active support of CNES and the Comat design office.

After four years of this new phase of research and development, Mumm Cordon Rouge Stellar is now fully compliant with space requirements, thanks to the collaboration with CNES, attesting to its readiness for future space flights.

Mumm Cordon Rouge Stellar is designed in three parts

Contained in a half-glassbottle, the wine is secured by a perfectly reliable stainless steel opening-closing device. It only comes into contact with glass and stainless steel, identical to Mumm's blending tanks in Reims, two materials that ensure ideal preservation. This unit is perfectly suited to the constraints dictated by champagne.

An aircraft-grade aluminum shell protects the glass bottle.

The upper part, known as the "service" part, is composed of a long neck topped by a cork and a ring (which holds the cork and locks the bottle's stainless steel mechanism).

With itsfuturistic appearance, Mumm Cordon Rouge Stellar nevertheless has a shape close to that of a traditional champagne bottle, reproducing as faithfully as possible the earthly ritual of champagne.

The ultimate goal is for Mumm Cordon Rouge Stellar to help further space exploration. Space travelers will be able to enjoy a product made from the soil of the Earth and the know-how of humanity, a symbol of our culture. The best champagne enables us to recreate an emblematic ritual of celebration and conviviality that brings us together.

Space exploration enables us to better observe and understand our own world. It also generates technological innovations that help to change our lives on Earth, and research that creates advances in various fields.

In space, there's a loss of temporal reference points and terrestrial habits. For balance and well-being, it is essential to maintain a link with the Earth and its culture. As a terrestrial symbol of the art of living, champagne has this universal appeal.
