Champagne A. Bergère — From the Petit Morin terroir since 1848

Nestled in Fèrebrianges, in the heart of the Petit Morin Valley, Champagne A. Bergère embodies a rigorous vision of terroir-driven champagne: 45 hectares, 139 separately vinified plots, and a 70 per cent Chardonnay blend that imbues the style with a distinctive mineral tension. Cellar master since 2014, Adrien Bergère champions a minimalist approach — spontaneous fermentation on indigenous yeasts, gravity-fed settling at 16 °C, and ageing in a combination of stainless steel, barrels and large casks — to reveal the precision of each lieu-dit. The chalky, flinty soils of the Petit Morin sit alongside the clay-limestone soils with millstone content for the Pinot Noir, whilst plots in the grands crus of the Côte des Blancs (Avize, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Cramant) round out the aromatic palette. The result: precise champagnes, unfiltered and unfined, whose clarity and definition deserve the attention of the most discerning connoisseurs.

Champagne A. Bergère — Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Extra Brut

The A. Bergère vintages — Plot-specific precision and Chardonnay

The A. Bergère range is divided into three lines. The ‘Iconiques’ includethe Origine Brut (an entry-level wine with a predominance of Chardonnay, ideal with seafood and oysters), the Rosé Brut and the Millésime Brut. The ‘Parcellaires’ range offers greater precision in terms of the specific vineyard site: Blanc de Blancs Solera, Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Extra Brut (Côte des Blancs), Terres Blanches Brut Nature, Les Vignes de Nuit, Les Peignottes, Les Clos Extra Brut Meunier, Rosé de Saignée and the extremely rare Petit Meslier. The Coteaux Champenois range completes the selection with a red and a white from the village of Fèrebrianges.

From a refined aperitif (Origine Brut with oysters, delicate fish in beurre blanc sauce) to fine dining pairings — Grand Cru Extra Brut with seared scallops, Rosé de Saignée with roast poultry and porcini mushrooms, Terres Blanches Brut Nature with grilled lobster —, each cuvée has its own specific purpose. The Petit Meslier, a grape variety that has all but disappeared from Champagne, offers a lively acidity and a lemony freshness unrivalled in the range.

A. Bergère — Five generations at the heart of Le Petit Morin

Founded in 1848, the A. Bergère estate has spanned five generations: from Armand to Albert, then André — after whom the estate is named —, right through to Adrien and Annaëlle Bergère, who are now driving its growth. Based in Fèrebrianges, a village in the Marne region off the beaten track of the Champagne routes, the estate has built up a vineyard of 45 hectares across 139 plots between the Petit Morin Valley (35 ha, chalky and flinty soils), the Sézannais and the Côte des Blancs — Avize, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Cramant, Oger and Chouilly.

Adrien Bergère, cellar master, oversees a fully plot-by-plot winemaking process: each batch ferments spontaneously on its native yeasts, without fining or filtration. The blending — carried out blind in May — combines wines aged in stainless steel, barrels and large casks, depending on the cuvée. Around 12 hectares are farmed organically, reflecting a growing commitment to the environment.

What is the perpetual solera system, and why does it make the A. Bergère cuvée unique?
Unlike a traditional blend, which starts from scratch every year, A. Bergère’s perpetual solera system maintains a reserve of older wines: with each vintage, a portion is drawn off and replaced by the new wine. The oldest wines impart complexity and flavour character to the more recent ones, creating an inimitable continuity of style that traditional blends cannot replicate.
