Charles Heidsieck Champagne — The elegance of the chalk cellars since 1851

Founded in 1851 in Reims by Charles-Camille Heidsieck, the House of Charles Heidsieck embodies a distinctively Champenois style: one characterised by complexity, depth and a fully embraced generosity. Beneath its gardens lie the legendary Gallo-Roman chalk cellars, acquired in 1867 and designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015 — 8 kilometres of tunnels dug 30 metres beneath Reims, maintained at a constant temperature all year round. It is in these exceptional cellars that the reserve wines age, making up as much as 40 per cent of the Brut Réserve — the hallmark of a vinous and velvety style that is rare amongst non-vintage champagnes. Under the guidance of cellar master Cyril Brun, each blend draws on this legacy of vintages to offer unrivalled consistency and aromatic richness.

 Charles Heidsieck Brut Réserve Champagne

The Charles Heidsieck cuvées — From Brut Réserve to the prestigious vintage champagne

The range is centred around four main cuvées. The Brut Réserve, the flagship of the range and the house’s signature cuvée, captivates with its full-bodied character — ideal as an aperitif with foie gras on brioche, or with a meal of pan-fried scallops and free-range poultry in a creamy sauce. The Rosé Réserve pairs superbly with fine charcuterie, salmon carpaccio and strawberries with pepper. The Blanc de Blancs, with its lively acidity and minerality, pairs well with oysters, roasted lobster and langoustines. Finally, the Blanc des Millénaires, a prestigious vintage cuvée, is perfect for fine dining: turbot en croûte, sweetbreads and black truffles.

These champagnes should be served at between 9 and 11 °C, in a stemmed tulip glass that allows their complex aromas to unfold. The Brut Réserve can be cellared for 3 to 5 years in a cool, dark cellar; the vintage champagnes and the Blanc des Millénaires benefit from being left to age for 5 to 10 years to reveal their full depth.

Charles Heidsieck — Champagne Charlie and the legendary chalk cellars

Charles-Camille Heidsieck founded the house in 1851 with the ambition of conquering international markets. As early as 1852, he became the first to market champagne in the United States, criss-crossing the country on horseback and by stagecoach, top hat firmly perched on his head, to the extent that he was dubbed ‘Champagne Charlie’ by a fascinated American press. A flamboyant dandy and adventurer, he was even imprisoned during the American Civil War before returning to France. The house established itself as a supplier to nine European royal courts and won the gold medal at the Bordeaux World’s Fair in 1859.

The acquisition of the chalk cellars in 1867 marked a pivotal turning point: these Gallo-Roman galleries became the beating heart of the house. The blending philosophy is based on an unshakeable principle — the vital importance of reserve wines. Cellar Master Cyril Brun embodies this tradition today, crafting each cuvée from several years’ worth of vintage reserves to ensure the generous, full-bodied signature of the Charles Heidsieck style.

Your questions about Charles Heidsieck champagnes

Is Charles Heidsieck champagne good value for money?
For a leading Reims-based house with UNESCO-listed chalk cellars and reserve wines aged for ten years, Charles Heidsieck offers a positioning that is consistent with its high standards of quality. The Brut Réserve is regularly hailed as one of the most complex and generous non-vintage champagnes in Champagne, with a richness of aroma rarely achieved in this category.
What food and wine pairings go well with Charles Heidsieck champagne?
Brut Réserve is perfect with a sophisticated aperitif, foie gras, pan-fried scallops and poultry in sauce. Rosé Réserve pairs well with fine charcuterie, salmon and strawberries with pepper. The Blanc de Blancs brings out the best in oysters and shellfish. The Blanc des Millénaires, a prestige cuvée, is perfect for gourmet dishes such as turbot, sweetbreads and black truffles.
How should Charles Heidsieck champagne be served and stored?
Serve at between 9 and 11 °C in a stemmed tulip glass to allow the aromatic complexity to unfold. Store the bottles horizontally, away from light and vibrations, at between 10 and 12 °C. The Brut Réserve can be kept for 3 to 5 years; the vintage wines and the Blanc des Millénaires can be cellared for 8 to 10 years.

What is the difference between Charles Heidsieck and Piper-Heidsieck?
Charles Heidsieck and Piper-Heidsieck are two distinct houses, both founded in Reims in the 19th century, but with radically different styles. Charles Heidsieck focuses on richness and a high proportion of reserve wines to achieve a deep, vinous profile. Piper-Heidsieck takes a fresher, fruitier approach. Two signatures, two blending philosophies.
Which Charles Heidsieck cuvée should you choose as a gift or for a special occasion?
For a prestigious gift or a memorable celebration, the Blanc des Millénaires is the obvious choice: an exceptional vintage cuvée, it brings together the finest Chardonnays aged in the UNESCO-listed chalk cellars. To introduce a wine lover to the brand at home, the Brut Réserve — complex, full-bodied and approachable — remains the ideal choice.
