Champagne Françoise Bedel — A pioneer of biodynamics in the Marne Valley

In the Marne Valley, in the heart of the village of Crouttes-sur-Marne, Françoise Bedel has been cultivating a 9-hectare vineyard since 1980 on clay and calcareous marl soils spread across four neighbouring communes. A pioneer of biodynamic viticulture in Champagne — ECOCERT-certified since 1998 — she has chosen a vibrant approach to viticulture, guided by lunar cycles and the deep health of the soil rather than by yields. Pinot Meunier, which accounts for 78 per cent of the vineyard’s grape varieties, defines the character of her wines: a full-bodied roundness, earthy energy and mineral tension rooted in the limestone depths of the terroir. Extended ageing — a minimum of six years on lees, up to sixteen years for the prestige cuvées — and the complete absence of chaptalisation lend the range a complexity praised by Robert Parker (91–92) and the Revue du Vin de France (93).

The Françoise Bedel cuvées — Extra-brut, Meunier and Marne terroir

The Françoise Bedel range centres on seven cuvées with a strong sense of terroir. Origin'Elle, a multi-vintage blend dominated by Meunier, is ideal as an aperitif or with fine claires oysters. Entre Ciel et Terre, brimming with mineral energy, pairs beautifully with scallops and rock fish. Dis Vin Secret, with its deep, slightly oxidative notes, complements sweetbreads or poultry with wild mushrooms. L’Âme de la Terre, the most ambitious cuvée, pairs beautifully with game or a long-matured Comté. Jouvence, Comme Autrefois and Robert Winer complete a range designed to suit every occasion, from a festive aperitif to a substantial, characterful meal.

Served at between 8 and 10 °C in a wide-bowled glass — such as a Burgundy glass — which allows the aromatic complexity to unfold, the Bedel range has excellent ageing potential. The extra-brut and zero-dosage cuvées gain depth two to five years after purchase, when stored at 12 °C away from light; the prestige cuvées can develop favourably for up to ten years in a temperate cellar.

‘Pépites en Champagne’ showcases the finest cuvées from the House of Bedel, selected at source and dispatched with the utmost care. Express delivery to France and Europe, reinforced packaging, personalised advice.

Françoise Bedel — A pioneer of biodynamic viticulture in the Marne Valley

Founded in 1980, the Bedel estate has its roots in Crouttes-sur-Marne, a village closely linked to the river of the same name. Françoise Bedel began her transition to biodynamic viticulture in the late 1990s — a pioneering decision in an appellation that was then largely devoted to conventional farming. Its 9 hectares of old vines, aged between 30 and 60 years, spread across Crouttes-sur-Marne, Nanteuil-sur-Marne, Charly-sur-Marne and Villiers-Saint-Denis, form a cohesive vineyard, cultivated without synthetic inputs and ECOCERT-certified since 1998.

The grapes are harvested by hand, once they have reached perfect ripeness. Vinification relies on indigenous yeasts, with no chaptalisation and very low sulphite levels. Ageing continues on the lees for at least six years, in barrels and enamelled vats — and for up to sixteen years for the most ambitious cuvées, all produced as extra-brut or zero dosage, with no added residual sugar.

Your questions about Françoise Bedel champagnes

What is the difference between biodynamic and organic viticulture?
Organic farming prohibits the use of synthetic chemical inputs. Biodynamic farming goes a step further: plant- and mineral-based preparations (horn manure, herbal infusions), lunar calendars, and the view of the soil as a living organism. ECOCERT-certified since 1998, Françoise Bedel is one of the Champagne region’s pioneers of this holistic approach, which was extremely rare in the appellation at the time.
What food and wine pairings go well with Françoise Bedel champagne?
Extra-brut cuvées, dominated by Meunier, pair naturally with oysters, scallops, rock fish or creamy risotto. Origin'Elle shines as an aperitif. Entre Ciel et Terre brings out the best in fine seafood. Dis Vin Secret and L’Âme de la Terre come into their own with sweetbreads, truffled poultry or a platter of mature hard cheeses.
How should Françoise Bedel champagne be served and stored?
Serve at between 8 and 10 °C in a wide-bowled glass (such as a Burgundy glass) to release the aromatic complexity, which is far greater than a narrow flute would allow. Extra-brut cuvées develop greater depth two to five years after purchase, when stored at 12–14 °C away from light. Prestigious cuvées can age favourably for five to ten years in a temperate, slightly humid cellar.
Where can I buy Françoise Bedel champagne online?
Discover the full Françoise Bedel range at Pépites en Champagne — an artisan selection, expert advice, and express delivery throughout France and Europe.
Which Françoise Bedel wine should you choose, depending on your budget or the occasion?
For those new to champagne or looking for an affordable gift, Origin'Elle offers the characteristic roundness of Meunier, ideal as an aperitif. For a special meal or a prestigious gift, L'Âme de la Terre — aged for several years on its lees — is the gold standard. In between, ‘Entre Ciel et Terre’ or ‘Dis Vin Secret’ will appeal to those who appreciate mineral complexity and everyday champagne.
Why does Pinot Meunier give Champagnes from the Marne Valley such a distinctive character?
Pinot Meunier, the king of grape varieties in the Marne Valley, ripens early and brings a rounded fruitiness, notes of brioche and immediate richness — whereas Chardonnay tends towards minerality and Pinot Noir towards structure. Accounting for 78 per cent of the vineyard on clay and calcareous marl soils, it lends Bedel wines a unique earthy vigour, absent from the standardised blends of the major wine merchants.
