Champagne Gonet Sulcova — Grand Cru, Low Dosage, Three Exceptional Terroirs

Based in Épernay since 1917, Gonet Sulcova cultivates 20 hectares across three exceptional Champagne terroirs. At the heart of the house’s style, the chalk soils of the Côte des BlancsLe Mesnil-sur-Oger and Oger, two Grand Cru communes whose reputation for Chardonnay is well established — impart their mineral tension and verticality to a range resolutely dominated by Chardonnay (80 per cent). The philosophy is clear: dosages reduced to the bare minimum, extended ageing on lees, and rigorous selection of vintages. Added to this are the clay-limestone soils of Montgueux, a terroir of character with distinctive exotic notes, and the soils of the Aube region at Loches-sur-Ource. Karla and Yan-Alexandre Gonet, who now head the estate, are carrying on this family legacy with dual HVE and VDC certification, a testament to their commitment to sustainable and responsible viticulture.

The Gonet Sulcova cuvées — From Extra Brut to Prestige Gaïa

The Gonet Sulcova range covers the full spectrum of Champagne styles, demonstrating remarkable consistency in terms of terroir. The Brut Réserve (60% Pinot Noir, 40% Chardonnay), which is fruity and lively with citrus notes, is ideal as an aperitif or with high-quality charcuterie. The Blanc de Blancs Brut, made from 100 per cent Chardonnay from the Côte des Blancs, pairs perfectly with oysters, langoustines or sea bass tartare. The Cuvée Montgueux (100% Chardonnay from clay-limestone soils), with notes of pineapple and mango, perfectly complements poultry in a lemon sauce or pan-fried scallops. The Cuvée Sladka demi-sec, with its rounded character, pairs well with a fruit-based dessert or pan-fried foie gras. The Rosé Dry and the Cuvée Sakura Rosé Extra Brut, with their elegant red berry notes, complement semi-cured salmon or duck breast. At the very top of the range, the non-dosé Grand Cru Extra Brut and the Cuvée Gaïa Grand Cru Extra Brut, aged in oak barrels — full-bodied, complex, gourmet — reveal their full depth when paired with truffled Bresse poultry, sweetbreads or hard cheeses.

Served at between 8 and 10 °C in a narrow tulip-shaped glass that preserves the Chardonnay’s finesse, these cuvées are at their best when enjoyed with a meal. Non-vintage bruts should be consumed within 3 years of purchase. The Millésime Grand Cru and the Gaïa can be cellared for 5 to 10 years in a cool cellar — stored horizontally, away from light and vibrations.

Gonet Sulcova — A century of Chardonnay in Épernay

Charles Gonet laid the foundations of the house in 1917 in Épernay. A century later, the Gonet-Sulcova family — represented today by Karla and Yan-Alexandre Gonet — carries on this legacy across a 20-hectare vineyard spread across the Côte des Blancs, Montgueux and the Aube. Three terroirs with contrasting characteristics, yet a shared conviction: to let each site express itself without artifice.

The winemaking process reflects this commitment: minimal dosage, long ageing on lees — a minimum of 15 months for non-vintage bruts, three years for vintage champagnes, and up to six years for certain prestige cuvées. Vintages are selected with the utmost rigour; a vintage cuvée is produced only when the harvest fully warrants it.

Your questions about Gonet Sulcova champagnes

What is the difference between the Gonet Sulcova vintages?
The range is structured around terroir and dosage. The Brut Réserve (predominantly Pinot Noir) is the most fruity and approachable. The Blanc de Blancs and the Cuvée Montgueux explore Chardonnay across two contrasting terroirs — the chalk of the Côte des Blancs and clay-limestone soils. The Extra Brut Grand Cru is undosaged, mineral and dry. La Gaïa, aged in oak barrels, represents the pinnacle of the range for connoisseurs seeking complexity and ageing potential.
What food and wine pairings go well with Gonet Sulcova champagne?
The Brut Réserve is ideal as an aperitif or with fine charcuterie. The Blanc de Blancs and the Grand Cru Extra Brut are the perfect accompaniment to oysters, shellfish and fine fish. The Cuvée Montgueux, with its exotic notes, pairs well with spicy dishes or pan-fried scallops. The semi-dry Cuvée Sladka complements fruity desserts and foie gras. The rosé cuvées pair beautifully with semi-cured salmon or duck breast. The Gaïa Grand Cru reveals its full depth when served with truffled poultry or mature cheeses.
How should Gonet Sulcova champagne be served and stored?
Serve at 8–10 °C in a narrow tulip-shaped glass, which concentrates the Chardonnay’s delicate aromas without dispersing them. Non-vintage bruts should be consumed within 3 years of purchase. Vintage cuvées and Gaïa can be cellared for 5 to 10 years in a cool cellar (10–12 °C), stored horizontally, away from light and vibrations. Avoid the fridge for long-term storage.

Why does the low dosage of Gonet Sulcova alter the tasting experience?
Dosage refers to the amount of sugar added to the liqueur d’expédition after disgorgement. By reducing it to the bare minimum, Gonet Sulcova preserves the raw expression of its terroirs — the limestone minerality of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger and Oger, the exotic character of Montgueux — without smoothing them out. The result: more precise, more gastronomic champagnes that reveal the terroir rather than the recipe. A far cry from the rounded, sweet styles tailored for the general public.
How does Gonet Sulcova differ from the major Champagne houses?
Whilst the major houses blend wines from hundreds of villages to ensure consistency of style, Gonet Sulcova works with 20 hectares under its full control, comprising three named and traceable terroirs: Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Oger Grand Cru and Montgueux. This transparency regarding origin, combined with dual HVE and VDC certification and extended ageing on lees, aligns the house more closely with the ethos of an independent winegrower than with that of a high-volume wine merchant.
