Leonardo di Caprio offers more than a glass of Telmont champagne

Everything is definitely moving in Champagne, after the announcement of the entry of the Pinault family in the capital of Jacquesson, here is Leonardo DiCaprio who invests in Telmont champagne. A real commitment for the actor who wishes to support the project of this House with great ecological ambitions. Ludovic du Plessis, its president, tells us more.

What motivates Leonardo DiCaprio's entry into the capital?

I would like to say that for Leonardo DiCaprio, it is an investment "in the name of the earth", to use our motto. I didn't want to go looking for a muse at all. I don't fit into that. He invests, it's very different. We're in direct contact and he's going to take a deep interest in the subject. As you know, at Telmont, we have made bold decisions (the elimination of cases, the exclusive use of champagne bottles, the exclusion of non-recycled transparent glass, the 100% organic goal for 2031...), and we try to do things that still make sense. The same goes for this investment, which represents first of all a nice support to the strong message of sustainability that we try to carry, we need it, it is a form of recognition for a champagne house that wants to reduce its carbon footprint at all costs, by all means. I think that this will be a gas pedal for us in our commitments, in our intuitions. It will help us to preach the good word in the name of the Earth that drives us every day. It is our reason for being!

What exact share does Leonardo DiCaprio take in your capital?

We do not communicate on this element. I can simply tell you that the Cointreau group remains the majority shareholder, and that with him the company now has a total of four shareholders. Bertrand Lhopital, a descendant of the founding family and head of the cellars, is a shareholder and so am I.

How did you meet him?

I've known him for fifteen years now, I lived in New York for five years which led me to meet a lot of people including Leonardo. When I started the Telmont adventure, I told him about the project, about what we wanted to do, and he was immediately interested. Then we tasted the wines, he liked them, exactly the same way I did when I came back to Champagne to find the house I wanted to work with and where I immediately fell under the spell of the BSA. He liked the project, he liked the wine, he told me: "Great! Let's do it". This discovery was made during the confinement, he could not move, he was in Los Angeles, we sent him bottles, and we did the tasting live. It was very intense, full of emotions, and that's when we realized that we can get a lot of things across without traveling, which is better for our imprint! Nevertheless, he is going to come and see us in Champagne soon... I think it is also a nice message in general for Champagne that he is interested in this vineyard. He is someone who knows France well, who loves our country and in particular its history, he is very erudite.

In the movie the Great Gatsby, we see DiCaprio tasting a lot of champagne, is the man behind the actor also a great wine lover?

He is a real wine lover, but the film that you absolutely must see is his latest: "Don't look up", which talks a lot about global warming and the denial in which we live. The cast is incredible: Jennifer Lawrence, Cate Blanchett ... The wine is not the only sector where Leonardo DiCaprio has made investments in sustainable development. He is notably a shareholder of the eco-responsible shoes Allbirds or electric cars Polestar.

Was Brad Pitt's investment in Champagne with Fleur de Miraval an emulation for him?

Laughs... We haven't discussed it!
