Krug 2008 Timeless Elegance

2701 Views

The House considers that each vintage Krug expresses the unique character of a particular year. A Krug Vintage brings together the most expressive wines of a single year, enhanced by more than ten years of aging in the cellar. Each Krug Vintage is different: it is the Music of the Year, transposed into the universe Krug.

Krug 2008 is the elegant and intense story of a fresh and balanced year, which the tasting committee of our House has dubbed "Timeless Elegance".

Due to the remarkably mild weather in 2008, the grapes were able to ripen quietly, giving them a nice freshness at harvest time. Surprisingly, despite these conditions, we observed a great diversity from one plot to another. The beauty of this contrast led us to integrate complementary flavors and aromas from different parcels, including Aÿ, Bouzy and Ambonnay. Krug 2008 is one of our great classics.

The year 2008 was one of the coolest in the last 14 years, but also one of the least sunny in Champagne for almost half a century. The rainfall was not excessive during the growth of the vines while the summer was dry. The climatic conditions during the harvest were ideal. The absence of strong heat during the summer of 2008 allowed a slow and progressive maturation of the grapes.
At Krug, the year 2008 gave birth to a timeless Champagne, perfectly balanced between freshness, structure and aromatic richness. The unexpected variety of grape varieties translates into great complexity, and we observed a very broad spectrum of flavors and aromas during the harvest. For the final blend, our Chef de Caves selected wines that reflected the complexity of 2008 in a beautifully structured composition marked by the elegance of that year.

For the final creation, we chose the wines that best highlighted the exceptional character of 2008. The Pinot Noirs, which make up more than half of the blend (53%), come mainly from the famous parcels on the southern slopes of the Montagne de Reims, notably those of Aÿ, Mareuil, Bouzy and Ambonnay. The Meuniers (25%), all in tension, bring citrus notes, while the richly flavored wines of the Chardonnay parcels (22%) give a fruity note to the whole.
After 12 years in our cellars, Krug 2008 has gained in expression and presents a remarkable profile, precise and harmonious.

Tasting notes
At first glance, Krug 2008 reveals a bright and intense golden color. The nose is expressive, rich and generous, with patinated aromas of honey, licorice, menthol, orange peel and grapefruit. Lively, intense and harmonious, with good tension on the palate, notes of quince, candied fruit and citrus, yellow kiwi, starfruit, honey, apple pie, petit beurre, orange peel, peony and fennel, and floral and menthol touches stand out on the palate. Finally, the Krug 2008 vintage offers length on the palate, while being precise and remarkably structured.

Food and wine pairings
Krug 2008 goes wonderfully with oysters in tartar with lobster emulsion, parmesan shortbread, Chaource puff pastry with pistachio, rabbit terrine with sorrel, tagliatelle with mussels and basil, dishes prepared with aromatic herbs, such as oregano and thyme, white fish in a lemon pepper sauce, and with desserts that oppose liveliness and roundness, such as passion fruit and lemon meringue.

Notes
"Exceptional freshness enhanced by aromas of flint, flowers, almonds and lemons. Hazelnut and raspberry are also present. A complex champagne. On the palate, it oscillates between power and sweetness and reveals complex citrus aromas stimulated by a lasting acidity. An exceptional Krug 2008."

James Suckling
NOTE:100/100

"The Krug 2008 expresses all the freshness of this vintage well, it is a classic 2008 without excess power. This champagne impresses by its finesse in the mouth."
