Grande Cuvée 171e Édition, every year since the founding of Maison Krug, a new Edition of Krug Grande Cuvée has been created. Signature of the Champagne House, born from the imagination of a man, Joseph Krug, who dreamed of offering the best champagne possible each year, regardless of the vagaries of the weather.
This bottle of Champagne Krug Grande Cuvée Edition 171 with box has rested for about seven years in the cellar, thus gaining in expression and elegance.
To the eye
The color is an intense golden hue, indicative of the year.
On the nose
Aromas of caramel, nougat, hazelnut and freshly baked pastries.
On the palate
This Champagne reveals notes of citrus gratin and lime zest, with a very long, persistent finish.
The year 2000 was marked by varied climatic conditions, with a mild winter, a rainy spring, and a summer interspersed with storms. Exceptional hail on July 2 destroyed 13% of the appellation, particularly affecting the Pinot Noirs from the Montagne de Reims. Despite these hazards, the harvest, from September 11 to 25, produced a generous, high-quality crop. The final blend, from several emblematic terroirs, balances the citrus fruit of Chardonnays from Trépail and Villers-Marmery with Pinots Noirs from the southern slopes of the Montagne de Reims and Meuniers from Sainte-Gemme and Villevenard. The result is a harmonious Champagne, composed of 43% Chardonnay, 42% Pinot Noir and 15% Meunier, true to the House style Krug.
The House was founded in 1843 by Joseph Krug, a non-conformist visionary with an uncompromising philosophy. His dream was to create the best Champagne possible every year, regardless of annual climatic variations. Joseph Krug achieved his dream by paying particular attention to the character of the vineyard, respecting the individuality of each plot and its wine, and building up a vast library of reserve wines from different years. With his traditional approach to Champagne making, he decided to go beyond the very notion of vintage to create, each year, themost generous expression of Champagne. He thus founded a House where all Champagnes would be of equal distinction. Since then, six generations of the Krug family have pursued this dream, enriching the vision and know-how of the House's founder.
