Krug Grande Cuvée 173rd Edition embodies the essence of the House of Krug: a prestigious champagne born from the blending of 150 wines from 13 years, with the 2017 harvest as its base. Made from the three Champagne grape varieties—Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Meunier—including a significant proportion of reserve wines, it offers rare aromatic depth and remarkable consistency of style. After many years of resting in the cellar, it reveals a rich palette of ripe fruit, citrus, dried fruit, toasted brioche and pastry notes, supported by a creamy effervescence and mouthwatering freshness. An exceptional champagne, faithful to Joseph Krug's vision: to offer the greatest possible expression of champagne flavor each year.

Tasting

On tasting, Krug Grande Cuvée 173ème Édition presents a deep golden color, animated by fine, regular bubbles, the sign of long maturation in the cellar. The nose opens with notes of ripe yellow fruit (peach, mirabelle plum), juicy apple and pear, lifted by hints of ripe citrus and lightly candied zest, followed by toasted brioche, dried fruit and a delicate veil of honey and marzipan, testifying to the complexity of the blend.

On the palate, the texture is ample and creamy, carried by a caressing effervescence. Hazelnut, nougat, buttered brioche, citrus jelly and roasted yellow fruit, with a hint of honey and barley sugar. The long, salivating finish is energized by a lemony freshness and a subtle saline touch, leaving an impression of perfect balance between gourmandise, tension and depth.

Terroirs

Vallée de la Marne, Côte des Blancs
and Montagne de Reims

For Krug Grande Cuvée 173ème Edition, the House has created a meticulous blend of the three emblematic grape varieties of Champagne: mainly Pinot Noir, complemented by Chardonnay and Meunier. Pinot Noir provides structure, depth and length on the palate, Chardonnay offers chiselled freshness and refined minerality, while Meunier contributes a gourmet dimension, fruitiness and supple texture. These grape varieties come from prestigious terroirs in the Côte des Blancs, Montagne de Reims and Vallée de la Marne, where chalky and clay-limestone soils give the wine its aromatic complexity and vibrant energy. This marriage of grape varieties and terroirs, sublimated by the addition of numerous reserve wines and long cellar aging, makes 173ème Édition a unique cuvée, at once precise, generous and perfectly balanced.

Champagne House Krug

About this house

The House was founded in 1843 by Joseph Krug, a non-conformist visionary with an uncompromising philosophy. His dream was to create the best possible Champagne every year, regardless of annual climatic variations.

With his traditional approach to Champagne-making, Joseph Krug decided to go beyond the very notion of vintage to create the most generous expression of Champagne every year. He thus founded a House where all Champagnes would be of equal distinction.

Chef's word

Chef Arnaud Lallement testifies:

"This Grande Cuvée tells me thestory of Champagne over the last hundred and fifty years. It's a meal wine that triumphs from aperitif to dessert. As it opens, its aromas evolve. The freshness and liveliness of the beginning give way to notes of candied citrus, toasted, toasted nuances, which will enjoy the company of a capon stuffed with foie gras and mushrooms or duck with ponzu (citrus and soy reduction)."
