Grande Cuvée 171e Édition, every year since the founding of Maison Krug, a new Edition of Krug Grande Cuvée has been created. Signature of the Champagne House, born from the imagination of a man, Joseph Krug, who dreamed of offering the best champagne possible each year, regardless of the vagaries of the weather.
This bottle of Champagne Krug Grande Cuvée Edition 171 with box has rested for about seven years in the cellar, thus gaining in expression and elegance.
Fresh fruit dominates the nose. In an exquisite play of contrasts, this Champagne opens with an enveloping roundness of pastry and stewed fruit. Smoky notes and thyme are also present. The finish is a surprise. Chiselled and lively, it lingers with notes of sea salt and grapefruit zest.
The year 2011 at Krug was marked by a paradoxical climate with inverted seasons and extreme conditions. After a summery spring and early flowering in mid-May, the harvest (August 25 - September 3) was influenced by peaks of heat followed by intense rain.
The Pinots Noirs offered balance and structure, the Meuniers retained freshness and elegant bitterness, while the Chardonnays, riper due to the heat, gained in roundness and generosity. The climate "cooked" the fruit while preserving a moderate sugar content.
For the final blend, Pinots Noirs (46%) provide structure, Chardonnays (37%) offer ripe fruit aromas, and Meuniers (17%) add freshness and elegance. After 13 years in the cellar, Krug 2011 stands out for its expression, harmony and finesse.
The House was founded in 1843 by Joseph Krug, a non-conformist visionary with an uncompromising philosophy. His dream was to create the best Champagne possible every year, regardless of annual climatic variations. Joseph Krug achieved his dream by paying particular attention to the character of the vineyard, respecting the individuality of each plot and its wine, and building up a vast library of reserve wines from different years. With his traditional approach to Champagne making, he decided to go beyond the very notion of vintage to create, each year, themost generous expression of Champagne. He thus founded a House where all Champagnes would be of equal distinction. Since then, six generations of the Krug family have pursued this dream, enriching the vision and know-how of the House's founder.
