The Champagne AOC extends over 319 crus (310 present-day communes) and 34,317 hectares, across four regions: Vallée de la Marne (12,150 ha), Montagne de Reims, Côte des Bar and Côte des Blancs. 17 crus are classified as grand cru, 42 as premier cru. The largest grand cru is Chouilly (526 ha).
The Champagne appellation covers 319 crus and 34,317 hectares, including 17 grands crus and 42 premiers crus. Here is our atlas: the map of the four regions, the parcel maps of the grands crus and the complete list of villages.

The Champagne appellation does not cover a vague region: it is delimited plot by plot. It covers 319 crus — the historic villages, now grouped into 310 communes — and 34,317 hectares of classified vines, spread across four main regions, from the Montagne de Reims to the Côte des Bar, in the Aube. Among these crus, 17 are classified grand cru and 42 premier cru. We have drawn a plot map for each of them: here is the atlas, with the figures for each village.

The Vallée de la Marne is the largest, with 12,150 hectares spread across more than a hundred communes, along the river between Château-Thierry and Épernay: it is the kingdom of pinot meunier. The Montagne de Reims, south of Reims, is the land of pinot noir, with its grands crus of Verzenay, Ambonnay and Bouzy. The Côte des Blancs, south of Épernay, is almost entirely planted with chardonnay: this is where the great blanc de blancs wines are born. The Côte des Bar, in the Aube, further south and closer to Burgundy than to Reims, mainly grows pinot noir on clay-limestone soils.

Each map shows a present-day commune and its boundaries (shown as dotted lines). The plots in gold are those classified under the Champagne AOC; the other plots on the land registry remain in thin outline. The names in italics are the lieux-dits, the plot names found on the labels of terroir-driven cuvées. Neighbouring communes are named at the edges, to place each village within its hillside.
Inherited from the old échelle des crus, which set the price of grapes according to the reputation of each village, the grands crus are the communes that achieved the maximum rating of 100%. Our article on the classification of premiers crus and grands crus tells its history. Here they are, from the largest to the smallest vineyard, the largest being Chouilly with 526 hectares.
