Blanc de Noirs Champagne: what it is, what it tastes like, and 16 cuvées ranging from €32 to €99 to try
A white champagne made exclusively from black grapes: this is the ‘blanc de noirs’, the opposite of the ‘blanc de blancs’ and, for a long time, the poor relation of Champagne. It has become the favourite cuvée amongst lovers of everyday champagnes. What it is, what it tastes like, what to pair it with, and sixteen cuvées from our cellar, ranging from a winemaker’s Meunier at €32 to a Pinot Noir from a single vineyard produced by the great houses.
Champagne Deutz: an exceptional harvest for Caroline Latrive and Michel Davesne
Here’s a fine Champagne duo. Two cellar masters overseeing a harvest at Maison Deutz. And not just any harvest: Michel Davesne’s last and Caroline Latrive’s first, following 15 years at Champagne Ayala.
Philipponnat: Royale Réserve, Grand Blanc, Cuvée 1522 or Clos des Goisses — which cuvée should you choose?
There is the Clos des Goisses — a 45-degree slope of pure chalk, facing due south over the Marne Canal, producing the appellation’s most powerful champagne — and there is everything else Philipponnat produces alongside it: a Pinot Noir-dominated Royale Réserve, a vintage Grand Blanc, and a Cuvée 1522 named after the year the family arrived in Aÿ. Here is the range, with prices from our cellar.
Henri Giraud: Esprit Nature, Hommage au Pinot Noir, Dame-Jane or Fût de Chêne — which cuvée should you choose?
Henri Giraud is the most distinctive winery in Aÿ: four centuries of family history, fifteen hectares of grands crus, not a single stainless-steel vat, and barrels crafted from oak from the Argonne Forest. Its range extends from an entry-level brut, sold in a box designed to be planted in the garden, to a Fût de Chêne, drawn from a perpetual reserve established in 1990. Here’s how to interpret the range, and what each cuvée is worth.
