The Pol Roger cuvées — from Brut Réserve to Sir Winston Churchill

The Pol Roger range comprises six expressions of rare stylistic consistency. The Brut Réserve, a favourite on the British market since 1855, comes into its own as an aperitif with ‘fines de claire’ oysters or roasted langoustines — its lemony freshness and fine bubbles make it the ideal start to a meal. The vintage Blanc de Blancs, with all the minerality of the Côte des Blancs, reveals its full character when paired with pan-fried scallops, turbot in beurre blanc or lobster. The vintage Rosé, launched in 1961, combines structure and red fruit notes to enhance duck breast, roast guinea fowl or wild strawberries. The Pure Extra Brut (2007), with no dosage, pairs perfectly with salmon tartare or tuna carpaccio.

The Sir Winston Churchill — a prestige cuvée first produced in 1975 — deserves a few more years’ cellaring to reveal its full complexity: toasted, floral and fruity notes unfold perfectly with foie gras, sweetbreads or hard-pressed cheeses. Serve it at between 8 and 10 °C in a tulip-shaped glass. The Rich cuvée, which is close to a demi-sec, pairs well with fruit-based desserts and light pastries. The most structured vintages can easily be cellared for ten to fifteen years.

Pol Roger founded his house in 1849 in Épernay. Six generations later, the de Billy family continues this legacy with remarkable consistency: total independence, with quality as their sole guiding principle. The 92-hectare vineyard spans the three main Champagne regions — Montagne de Reims, Côte des Blancs and Vallée de la Marne — providing the aromatic diversity that underpins the complexity of the house blends.

Cellar master Damien Cambres ensures that winemaking focuses on consistency and uniformity from one vintage to the next. The 7.5 kilometres of cellars, spread over three levels — with the deepest gallery 33 metres underground — maintain a constant cool temperature all year round, an essential condition for the slow, controlled ageing that is the hallmark of the great independent houses.

Winston Churchill was one of Pol Roger’s most famous admirers: he counted this champagne amongst his favourites and drank it regularly.
