THE CUVÉES OF MAISON LAURENT-PERRIER
Raspberry-pink robe, gliding towards salmon hues over time, beneath a fine, persistent bubble. The nose is forthright, of remarkable freshness: raspberry, redcurrant, strawberry, black cherry — the whole palette of red fruit that the maceration of the pinot noir has fixed in the wine. The palate is supple and round, the fruit remains crisp, the acidity holds it all together, and the long finish ends dry despite the 9 g/L dosage. Serve between 8 and 10 °C, as an aperitif or at table: this is a gastronomic rosé, to be savoured in the freshness of its fruit.
Cuvée Rosé is a champagne made from pinot noir, and pinot noir alone: around ten crus from the Montagne de Reims, including the grands crus of Ambonnay, Bouzy, Louvois and Tours-sur-Marne. The grapes are hand-harvested, sorted, destemmed, then macerated for 48 to 72 hours depending on the year, at controlled temperature, in a press that the house built for its rosé alone: it is this maceration, not the addition of red wine, that gives the colour and intensity of the fruit. The wine then rests for at least five years in the cellar before a dosage of 9 g/L. For the 2024 limited edition, the coat-of-arms-shaped bottle is dressed in a metal sleeve with interlaced ribbons in pink, red, purple and copper.
Laurent-Perrier was born in 1812 in Tours-sur-Marne, when André-Michel Pierlot, a cooper from Chigny-les-Roses, settled there as a Champagne wine merchant. Without descendants, he passed the house on to his cellar master Eugène Laurent; upon his death in 1887, his widow Mathilde-Emilie Perrier added her name to his: Veuve Laurent-Perrier. In 1939, Marie-Louise de Nonancourt, a widow and mother of four, bought the estate; her son Bernard took over its management in 1948, at the age of twenty-eight, and made it one of the great Champagne houses — still family-owned and independent today.
In 1968, Laurent-Perrier launched Cuvée Rosé and claims to be the first house to make a maceration rosé, at a time when the practice was to blend white and red wines. The coat-of-arms-shaped bottle, inspired by 15th-century flasks, became its symbol; since 2017, the house has dressed it each year in a metal sleeve, and the 2024 Robe Rubans translates the wine's aromatic palette into colours, from the most delicate nuances to the most intense red fruit.
Shrimp and prawns are the pairing the house recommends: the red fruit and freshness of the rosé respond to the char of the plancha grill.
Exotic cuisine and marinated fish pair well with Cuvée Rosé: the roundness from the maceration envelops the raw fish, and the dry finish cleanses the vinegared rice.
Duck and Asian cuisines are house pairings: the black cherry and redcurrant of the wine stand up to the sweet-and-sour glaze.
