TASTING NOTES
The jury of the London Wine Competition, which awarded it the gold medal in 2026, describes it as follows: a fine, well-structured effervescence, subtle aromas of apple and brioche, a lively acidity, a touch of citrus bitterness and an elegant finish. A blanc de noirs built on finesse rather than power, true to the character of its plot, exposed to the morning sun. Serve at around 10-12 °C, in a wine glass rather than a flute, to let the pinot noir express itself.
The composition

Terroirs
Meurtet is a lieu-dit in Aÿ, a grand cru of the Vallée de la Marne: a 2.4-hectare plot of pinot noir, east-facing on a 15% slope, with deeper soils than its neighbour, Côte Glacière. It receives the gentleness of the morning sun, and its young vines produce a consistent, finesse-driven pinot noir. Deutz vinifies it alone, as a blanc de noirs, 100% pinot noir. 2019 was a year of contrasts in Champagne: three frost episodes in spring, two heatwaves in summer with peaks above 40 °C, then a harvest that opened on 31 August with grapes of exceptional quality, with an excellent balance between sugar and acidity.
About this house
Deutz was founded in Aÿ in 1838, when William Deutz, a merchant from Aachen, settled there with his partner Pierre-Hubert Geldermann. Now part of the Deutz group, the house sources its grapes within a twenty-kilometre radius of Aÿ, mainly from grand cru and premier cru vineyards, and vinifies more than ninety crus separately; Caroline Latrive has been the Cellar Master since 2022.
The Hommage à William Deutz range was born with the 2010 vintage, which blended the two pinot noir plots of Aÿ, Meurtet and Côte Glacière; since 2012, each has been vinified separately. Meurtet represents the finesse side: a rare, single-plot blanc de noirs, presented in its prestige gift box.
The perfect pairing
Aperitif
The wine's lively acidity and citrus bitterness cut through the richness of the ham; the pinot noir complements its salty flavour.
Starter
A blanc de noirs pairs well with mushrooms: the wine's brioche notes echo the chanterelles, while its acidity lightens the salmon.
Main course
Pinot noir from Aÿ and delicate flesh: a pairing of structure, which does not overpower the wine's finesse.
